UHS Health & Wellness is pleased to welcome (back) UMass Boston graduate, Andrea Higgins, M.A., GCFP of Kinesthetic Edge to our Wellness Wednesday Series. Andrea will present a workshop on Awareness Through Movement®, a process of learning that was developed by Moshe Feldenkrais, D.Sc. The lessons are performed lying quietly on a mat, and evoke a deep level of relaxation and heightened kinesthetic awareness.
After a lesson it is common to experience a feeling of ease, resulting from improved movement integration throughout the body. Due to the improved physicality that the lessons bring about, Awareness Through Movement can be a valuable resource for everyone who wants to remain active in a healthy way, and can be especially helpful for injury prevention and pain management for athletes and performing artists.
The mindful quality of the method also makes it an extremely effective stress management technique. Although the lessons utilize movement as a context for learning, they are nothing like exercise. Every action is performed in the gentlest way possible. Each student, regardless of their level of fitness and wellness, can participate safely by moving through the lesson at their own pace and in a range of motion that is comfortable.
