Coming this Winter to the Senior Center in Dedham, MA
What is the Feldenkrais Method? It is an experiential learning process that combines gentle movement and mindful attention to help improve physical, emotional, and intellectual well being. This eight-week class promises a quiet, gentle, internally-focused, and transformative experience.
Taught by Andrea Higgins, a somatic movement specialist and the director of Walpole based Kinesthetic Edge, each one-hour session will focus on bringing about a more integrated experience of the whole self. As integration improves, most students experience an improved sense of well being that usually begins with perceived physical changes, such as feelings of greater ease of movement and coordination. As an added benefit, this improved physicality is often accompanied by a sense of uplifted emotions and greater clarity of mind.
Best selling author, Norman Doidge, MD has endorsed the Feldenkrais Method in his latest book, The Brain’s Way of Healing: Remarkable Discoveries and Recoveries from the Frontiers of Neuroplasticity. There are also a growing number of studies that are providing evidence of the benefits of training in this Method. (Please see a link to a Research Bibliography below.)
Unlike most mind body practices, the study of Feldenkrais is less about physical exertion or mastery, than it is about learning. Over time, the lessons can become challenging, but in this introductory series we will work sitting in chairs. If you can get yourself onto a chair (and back off it again), you will be fine, regardless of your overall fitness level. Although you can join in at any time in the series, you will get the greatest benefit by participating in all eight sessions.
Each week we will work towards an improved experience of mind body integration, with themes being explored from a variety of perspectives. Some classes will have physical focus, others will explore the cognitive and emotional benefits of this training method. The movement will be very gentle and should be safe and comfortable for most individuals, regardless of your overall fitness level. However, if you have any special concerns, please consult your physician before enrolling. All you need to bring with you to class each week is an open mind, a good attitude, and a smile. Hope to see you there!
