An Awareness Through Movement® - One Day Intensive

In this program we explore the function, comfort, and integration of the feet, for improved mobility, stability, and balance.

DESCRIPTION

Awareness Through Movement® (ATM) is a mind body learning method that is physically therapeutic and calming for the nervous system. Lying quietly on a mat, you will follow a series of verbally guided* instructions to perform a series of simple movements. At the same time, you will be instructed to pay attention to how these movements resonate throughout your body. The process, which might be described as a movement-based approach to mindfulness, evokes a state of interconnected awareness between the mind and body. With continued practice, ATM can be an effective approach for improving body use. Although considered an educational process, as opposed to a medical intervention, many who study regularly report the following kinds of results:

  • Improvement in functional abilities, such as balancing, walking, turning and reaching—helpful to all clients, but especially those who experience limited function due to injury, or advanced age.
  • Reduction in chronic pain resulting from maladaptive movement habits or past injury.
  • Increased ability to sense and perceive the body in action, which is important for everyone, but especially beneficial to performing artists and elite athletes wishing to enhance performance.

WHAT TO EXPECT

ATM lesson are quiet and internally focused. The movement quality is gentle and should not cause you any discomfort. That being said, if you have an existing injury or pain issue, it can sometimes require a little extra patience to learn how to negotiate the experience in a comfortable way. In certain cases you may need to modify a position or movement in order to participate comfortably. Whatever your present situation, you should always model good self-care while doing ATM and never do anything that causes discomfort. It is advisable to speak with your doctor if you have any concerns about your ability to participate safely. You might also consider seeking out private study, if you feel that your needs will require more individualized attention.

THE ONE DAY FORMAT

Sometimes big and lasting changes require a period of complete immersion in lessons that are focused around a specific theme. This one-day intensive offers a more focused experience of Awareness Through Movement, and is best done on your day off. The schedule will include four 40-minute experiential modules with scheduled breaks to allow for processing and integrating. The breaks are an important part of the process. You are encouraged to take it easy during the breaks and for the rest of the day after the program concludes.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS CLASS

The lessons in this series require that you be able to lie on a mat, sit in a chair, and stand. For some of the lessons you will need a ball, approximately the size of a softball, although softer, more therapeutic exercise balls are the preferred choice. You should also have a quiet, comfortable space in which to work, where you will not be disturbed. Finally, you will need an internet enabled computer, tablet, or phone with a video and audio capability and Zoom Conferencing (a free conferencing application). The video** camera should be placed in such a way that the Educational Director can observe you during the class. In some cases this may require that you use a tripod. Please see further details on the technical requirements below.
